What Do Grubs Look Like?

Writer Ethan Hayes

Grub is soft and wormlike larvae of insects such as beetles. They usually feed on grassroots and organic matter in the soil. This causes the sections of grass to vanish.

The beetles have several species; therefore, grubs are also of many types, but the most common is lawn grub, known as a white grub.  They are usually found in the lawns and gardens. As soon as they hatch from eggs, they start eating grass insatiably. Many grubs have similar traits and look alike, which makes it difficult to separate their species.  In this article, we will discuss what type of bodies and appearance do they have.

What Grubs Look Like?

Grubs are soft and wormlike larvae beetles that feed on the grass, causing portions of it to vanish. Their size varies from species to species. If the beetle size is larger, then grubs will also have a larger size. Conversely, if species size is small, then grubs will have a smaller size.  But on average, they have a size of about half-inch in length.

They have soft and long cylindrical bodies. They have six legs that are located near their head. They look very similar to caterpillars but can be distinguished by looking at the legs. Caterpillars have legs that spread their entire body, but grubs have legs near their heads. Moreover, they are also less mobile, but their mobility also varies from species to species.

They have complex and dark heads having mouthparts that they use for chewing. They also have spiracles and air holes along the sides of their bodies.  Most grubs have a creamy white color with a dark rusty orange head with a smooth and shiny body. Additionally, their larvae phase is subtly different. They remain in this phase for several months to several years.
