Silky Terrier Dog Breed Playing Around
House sparrows are omnivores that eat seeds, fruit, and insects. They are known to modify their feeding patterns in response to food sources given by people. They frequently visit bird feeders. When breeding, they primarily feed their young invertebrates like caterpillars, aphids, and beetles.

Vegetables

House sparrows are primarily vegetarian, subsisting mainly on seeds and plants. Tender grasses and delicate buds are their favorites. They also eat crops such as corn, oats, wheat, and sorghum. Ragweed, crabgrass, and various grasses, as well as buckwheat, are examples of wild edibles. House Sparrows eat rice, millet, black oil sunflower seeds, maize, milo, and sunflower seeds. Urban birds readily consume commercial birdseed. Also, house sparrows can eat fruits, berries, oranges, thistle, apples, almonds, and cracked corn.

Animals and Insects

House Sparrows consume insects in the summer and feed them to their young. Insects are caught in the air by pouncing on them, following lawnmowers, or visiting lights at twilight.

The freshly born sparrow eats nearly entirely on animal debris and insects; the high protein content is essential for optimal health and development. Adult birds, both cock and hen, will consume insects during this time of year as well. Aphids and caterpillars are particularly appealing. Some house sparrows will eat insects such as caterpillars, bugs, butterflies, cicadas, bees, wasps, spiders, worms, ants, mealworms, grasshoppers, and slugs.
