What Do House Termites Look Like?

Writer John Campbell

House Termites are tiny eusocial insects. They have equal length width and two straight antennae. They belong to the phylum Arthropoda as house termites have three pairs of legs, an exoskeleton, and a segmented body.

House termite, with its broad waist and four wings, lives in a dry wood habitat; that’s why it seeks shelter in homes and buildings. They are detritivores and feed on cellulose and organic matter from dead plants and trees. This article will discuss what their bodies are made up of and what type of appearance they have.

What House Termites Look Like?

House termites are one of the oldest surviving invertebrate creatures. Their body is divided into three segments: the head, the thorax, and the abdomen; however, the segments are not distinct. Their thorax and abdomen appear as one, giving them the appearance of only two body parts: a head and a body. They can measure up to a maximum of 1/2 inch in length and weigh up to only 0.9mg. They can vary in shades from white to light brown.

House termites are sometimes confused as flying ants. They do have a closer appearance but are not the same things. In actual they have a lot of differences if one takes a closer look at their bodies. House termites have four wings of equal length, two antennae that look like several tiny balls are connected, and six legs: two legs protrude from the thorax, and four legs protrude from the abdomen.

Some house termites have small eyes, but most of them are blind and born without eyes. They have exocrine glands all over their bodies that excretes a chemical called pheromones that help them communicate and navigate. They have small mandibles at the edge of their head to take bites of their food.
