The average size of an imperial moth is around 3 to 7 inches. Female imperial moths are slightly larger than male moths. An imperial moth can live up to two weeks because of the lack of functional mouthparts they are unable to feed themselves and die.

Imperial moths are found in Canada to Argentina. They are also found in southern New England, in the regions of eastern Nebraska and in central Texas. Imperial moths are found in habitats like deciduous forests which contain maple and oak trees, pine and spruce forests. Imperial moths are attracted to lights.

Plants and trees

Imperial moths eat a variety of plants and trees. Imperial moths are more likely to eat trees like pines, maples, sweetgum, sassafras, and oaks. Imperial moths also eat elm, cedar, hickory, honey locust, cypress, and persimmons. Like other moths, they are attracted to night lights and usually appear after sunset.

Imperial moths also eat rice, cereals, grain products, and nuts like peanuts, almonds, walnuts, and many more. These moths also infest dried fruits, pasta, birdseed, and pet food.

Imperial moth caterpillars are covered with long, irritating hairs on their body and if you touch them it can cause an itching rash.

What imperial moths don’t eat?

Imperial moths don’t eat insects and animals because they are the prey of many mammals like lizards, frogs, snakes, etc. Imperial moths don’t eat cloves, rosemary, thyme, bay leaves, and lavender. These plants can keep imperial moths away from the houses. Imperial moths don’t eat clothes and wood, rather they can damage the clothes.
