What Do Kangaroos Look Like?

Writer Rachel Davis

Kangaroos are the giant marsupials on earth found chiefly in the continent of Australia. They appear in different sizes and shapes. Kangaroos belong to the family Macropodidae, which means largely footed. Their height ranges from 3 to 8 feet, making them look huge, and they weigh between 40-200lbs (18-100 kgs). The major part of their weight is because of their muscle mass. Interestingly, kangaroos are the only large animals that hop, moving from one place to another.

They live in areas with an abundance of grass because they are herbivores. They feed on leaves, grass, ferns, flowers, and fruit because they cannot tear.

What Kangaroos Look Like?

Kangaroos are built for jumping. They are naturally strong, and most of their weight is composed of muscles. Long and powerful hindlimbs, large feet, small forelimbs (forepaws), and long and thick tails aid them in jumping. Their long tail helps them balance while hopping, swimming, and it is also used as a fifth limb sometimes. They are covered in fur, which varies in color from one species to another. The usual color of kangaroo fur is either red, grey, or light to dark brown. They have big shiny eyes.

The color of their eyes ranges from blue, red, and green to brown.

Kangaroos have distinctive long pointed ears making them excellent listeners, big shining eyes with keen eyesight, and long mouths helping them chew on the grassy food twice before passing it to the stomach.

Female kangaroos have a pouch attached to their bellies in which they carry their baby around. It is a significant feature of Kangaroos. The pouch is hairless from the inside, and it has several sweat glands that excrete antibiotic liquid to keep the baby kangaroo safe from microbes.
