Katydids are grasshopper-like insects, found worldwide. Katydids are known by their other name called “long-horned grasshoppers”. They are hard to spot when they land on green leaves. That’s because they have a similar, camouflage pattern in their appearance. Katydids feed on leaves and various other different components of plants and flowers. These small critters also feast on various insects if they come across them on plants.

Insects, Fish, and Animals

Although katydids forage mostly on plants, they don’t miss the other food opportunities. Accidently or knowingly, katydids would consume insects of various species.

But the insects have to be small enough to fit into the tiny mouth of katydids. That being said, katydids eat insects, bugs, ants, aphids, caterpillars, grasshoppers, milkweed, and other bugs. Together with these, katydids eat warts, caterpillars, lizards, mosquitoes, and frogs as well.

Fruit, Vegetables, and Plants

Katydids have a similar diet to other leaf-eaters. Their diet is exclusively based on feeding leaves, other parts of flowers, and plants. So you’ll hardly see them consuming anything beyond that. However, exceptions to some small insects exist as we mentioned earlier.

You’ll see them crawling on the barks, leaves, and other parts of trees. These critters find their way to plants to consume them as much as they want. After all, it’s their preferred diet. Hence, katydids eat plants, flowers, fruit, veggies, foliage, leaves, roses, and basil. Occasionally, katydids eat garden plants if they find their way to them. They’d devour anything as long as it’s a leaf of a plant.

What katydids don’t eat?

Occasionally, katydids eat insects if they happen to come across them. However, most of the time, they consume plant leaves. And other times, katydids don’t eat other things which aren’t part of their diet. Hence, katydids don’t eat tomato plants, tomatoes, succulents, stink bugs, cicadas, monarch caterpillars, praying mantis, and hummingbirds.
