What Do Leopard Seals Eat?

Writer Emily Cortez

With long bodies and elongated heads, leopard seals are considered the second largest species of seals in the Antarctic. They have long and heavy bodies and snake-like shapes and movements. They are dark grey from the upper body and light silvery grey from down. Leopard seals are carnivores and have more heterogeneous diets than one can imagine.

What do leopard seals eat?

Leopard seals largely eat penguins, seals, squid, turtles, crabs, snails, and anything else. Usually, they have sharp and large teeth to strain Krill plants from water. Also, leopard seals like to eat marine mammals like salmon, eels, seals, lobsters, octopus, mackerel, and squid.

Moreover, they also love to dine pups of other seals like crabeater and southern fur seals. They can even attack humans and seem to eat men with their long teeth and strong jaws. However, leopard seals like to eat crabs, tuna, seagulls, emperor penguins, sea otters, crabs, arctic cod, seaweeds, small sharks, turtles, elephant seals, and many others.

Also, the albatross is a large bird and mainly tends to fly. Therefore, leopard seals don’t have a natural predator, but once leopard seals get the chance to prey on them, they would love to eat.

What do leopard seals eat in the wild and captivity?

Two leopard seals can live in captivity if they find a large pool. In captivity, leopard seals eat cephalopods, snails, penguins, and small fish.

While in the wild, leopard seals eat sharks, salmon, Weddell seals, crabs, cod, lobster, and many others.

Which prey can be a risky meal for leopard seals?

Many large-sized organisms like polar bears, sea lions, and walrus usually tend to eat seals; therefore, they can be risky for leopards.

Moreover, leopard seals have only a predator killer whale, aka orca, so leopards don’t even try to eat them. Also, leopard seals alter their diet regarding weather and abundance of prey.
