What Do Ligers Eat? - Kylon Powell

Writer Sarah Silva

Liger is a hybrid offspring of a female tiger and a male lion, and ligers are classified as carnivores because they eat meat and animals for their survival. Ligers mostly live in captivity because it’s hard for them to survive in the wild.

Ligers are very few in numbers present worldwide. They can be found in the USA, Russia, Germany, and South Korea, and in South Africa. There are only a few in these countries. As ligers can’t live in the wild, they are mostly found in the zoo and with their private owners.

The average size of a liger is about 3.3 meters in length, and their average weight is about 400kg, but some can grow up to 1000kgs. The lifespan of a liger is about 13 to 18 years because they are hybrids, and like others, they frequently suffer from many types of infections.

Animals and meat

Ligers eat meat and animals for their nutrition. Ligers can eat horse, chicken, beef, or goat meat. Ligers also eat small mammals such as guinea pigs, shrews, squirrels, and hamsters. Ligers do eat fish and frogs. The favorite food of a ligger is deer meat. Ligers also eat crabs, lobsters as they contain huge amounts of proteins.

An adult liger can eat 450 kilograms of meat per day. They can eat as much as they get. They mostly prefer raw meat to eat, but sometimes they also eat grass to aid their digestion. Grass metabolizes their digestion so that they can easily eat raw meat. Ligers don’t attack or eat humans. When ligers are young, they are mostly fed by their mother.

What ligers don’t eat?

Ligers don’t eat vegetables, plants, and fruits. They don’t feed on insects and bugs because they have to eat large portions of meat for their survival.
