Loaches are also known as Cobitidae (dojo loach). There are about three to six most (whisker-like) barbells around their mouth. There are more than 200 known species of loaches. Most loaches are found in central and southern Asia, and three of them are found in northern Africa. They occur in freshwater rivers. They are found to be aggressive. Loaches are omnivores. They can eat meat and plants. They are also bottom-feeders. They are nearly 1 foot (30cm) long; some of them can be 50cm long. The weight of loaches is recorded between 0.3-6.6 lb. The lifespan of loaches is 10-15 years.
Animals
Loaches can eat meat in any form. Some of the animals which loaches eat are every type of snail (assassin snails, nerite snails, etc.), prawns, shrimps (including sherry shrimps, ghost shrimps), guppies, baby guppies. Loaches will eat other fish, baby fish, and even dead fish. Loaches are able to eat scuds, sand and fine gravel, dry flake food, and sinking wafers. As frozen meaty food, Loaches eat clams, brine shrimps, bloodworms, and daphnia. Loaches can eat fish flakes as live food.
Plants and vegetables
Loaches can consume aquarium plants as their food. Loaches can eat algae also but not all loaches can eat it. Some Loaches can also eat cucumbers and zucchini in vegetables. Sometimes Loaches may eat frogs. It was one time found that an injured frog was coming out of Loach’s mouth. Loaches will also eat pellets as their food. Loaches can eat other stem plants like Vallisneria, crypt ciliate, and sunset hygro.
Insects
Loaches can eat insects, including worms of all types, green foods, and insect larvae.
What loaches do not eat?
Loaches do not eat otocinclus and goldfish. Goldfish is said to be a companion of loaches. Some of the loaches do not consume algae.
