What Do Long Tailed Grass Lizards Eat?

Long tailed grass lizards are classified as insectivores because they mostly feed on small insects and bugs for their survival. They eat roaches, worms, caterpillars, and many other invertebrates for their nutrition. These long tailed lizards are small but they are dangerous to humans.

Long-tailed grass lizards live in the heavily planted savannah regions of India, Thailand, Laos, Burma, Cambodia, Vietnam, China, the Malaysian Peninsula, and Indonesia. They are also found in Hainan, Laos, North Burma, South East Asia, and Russia. These lizards mostly prefer to live in grasslands, forests, and dense vegetation areas.

The average size of a long tailed grass lizard is about 10 inches to 12 inches in length. Their body is shorter in size but their tail size is long. The average lifespan of a long tailed grass lizard is 5 years. 

Insects and bugs

Long tailed grass lizards feed on live insects and bugs. They can eat worms such as mealworms, wax worms, and earthworms. They also prey on fruit flies and crickets. Long tailed lizards are most likely to eat dubia roaches and caterpillars. Long tailed grass lizards also eat spiders, ants, and slugs. 

In captivity, long tailed grass lizards mostly feed on crickets because they contain a lot of proteins and nutrition. They may eat other invertebrates which contain vitamin supplements. A long tailed grass lizard eats every other day while juvenile lizards eat every day. Long tailed grass lizards feed on several crickets every other day.

At night, Long tailed grass lizards mainly eat flies, crickets and worms. These lizards breed during the spring season because in winter they hibernate. 

What long tailed grass lizards don’t eat?

Long tailed grass lizards don’t eat grass, vegetables or fruits. They hide in the grass during the day. These lizards don’t prey on large animals.
