What Do Lovebirds Look Like?

Writer John Campbell

The African active, affectionate, and playful lovebirds are named so because of their lovely and robust bonding with chosen mates. Lovebirds are the common name for a small group of parrots from the genus Agapornis. They live in the forests and savannas of Africa and Madagascar.

Lovebirds are counted as the smallest parrot species. They have a vibrant appearance and have a loving personality. Lovebirds are known for their affectionate nature, but they can be aggressive if not tamed from a very young age.

What Lovebirds Look Like?

Lovebirds are very small, ranging from 13 to 17 cm (5-7 in) long, and have a wingspan of 24cm, each wing being 9cm long. Lovebirds weigh about 40-60 grams. Their bright color catches eyes from afar. These small species of parrot are built broad and sturdy.

Their heads are a diversely colored part of their body. Lovebirds have various colors, including peach, white, teal, green, red, and are different from the lower body’s hue, mainly green. But the color of lovebirds varies from one species to another. Lovebirds have a stocky build. They are small, short, have sharp, pointed, and long hooked beaks but blunt and short tails.

Male and female lovebirds differ slightly in appearance and their personality traits. The male lovebirds are more vocal as they whistle, chirp, and call out loud to gain the attention of a female mate. They have a less rounded head and brighter and darker color around their eyes compared to the females.

The female lovebirds have longer, wider beaks, bigger heads, broader shoulders, and thicker rings around their eyes. All these features give the female lovebirds a slightly bigger build than their male counterparts. Different color patterns of the upper and lower body, slight build, and affectionate personality make lovebirds lovable pets for homes.
