Northern mockingbirds can be found in the majority in the continental United States and in Mexico and Canada. These birds are migratory birds, and in winter they migrate towards the south. Northern mockingbirds prefer open areas and forests to live. Their favorite habitats are forest edges, thickets, grasslands, scrub forests, desert edges, and savannas. 

The average size of a northern mockingbird is about 20cm to 28cm in length. The average size of a mockingbird ranges from 40grams to 58grams. Male mockingbirds are said to be slightly larger than female mockingbirds. The average lifespan of a mockingbird is about 8 years.

Insects and bugs

Northern mockingbirds feed on a variety of insects and bugs. Mockingbirds can eat caterpillars, beetles, grasshoppers, wasps, and ants. Mockingbirds also eat worms such as earthworms, mealworms, wax worms, sowbugs, and many others. Mockingbirds do eat spiders, crickets, snails, snakes, lizards, roaches, and centipedes. In summer, mockingbirds mostly rely on insects and bugs. Mockingbirds eat after every 15 to 20 mins. They remain active at night and eat at night and sing along while eating.

Northern mockingbirds mostly feed on fruits and seeds in winter. Mockingbirds love to eat berries, but they eat other fruits too. Mockingbirds can eat apples, melons, pears, bananas, peaches, grapes, and many wild fruits. Northern mockingbirds also eat seeds like suet, sunflower seeds, peanuts, vegetables, and safflower seeds. 

What mockingbirds don’t eat?
