What Do Otocinclus Eat? - Kylon Powell

Writer Robert King

It feeds on soft algal deposit that forms on the tank’s hard surfaces, such as the sides and bottom of the tank. It is therefore critical to ensure that the tank is clean, but not “too clean.” Additionally, supplements such as algae wafers and even some fresh veggies like green zucchini slices can be used in the otocinclus diet.

Animal and Insects

They are excellent at delicately cleaning your greenery, and your Catfish will remain happy and healthy as a result of eating any particles that fall from the leaves. They are also excellent for tanks that contain babies or shrimp because of their small size. The Otocinclus Catfish possesses excellent characteristics that can enhance any aquarium, but you should exercise caution when purchasing these fish from a store or aquarium supply company.

Plant and Fruit

Otocinclus are herbivores, which means they eat plants. It is algae and slime (biofilm) that they primarily eat in the wild, which accumulates on rocks and plants. As a result, it is critical to keep live plants in your aquarium to encourage algae growth and to provide leaves for the growth of biofilm. A variety of low-growing plants, including Anubias, Cryptocoryne, and Java Ferns, are excellent choices for growing in an aquarium.

Unless you have a very large tank, the algae buildup in a stable aquarium will usually not be sufficient to support 6 or more Otocinclus in its entirety. As a result, you should make sure to feed them algae wafers or catfish pellets on a regular basis. It is critical for them to consume food on a regular basis, so food must be readily available almost at all times. Otocinclus also eat algae, hair algae, brown algae, black beard, algae wafers, green spot algae, staghorn algae, white algae, blue-green algae, black hair algae, cucumber, carrots, dead plants, red algae, and plants.

What Otocinclus don’t eat?

In a fully algaefied aquarium, Otos will starve to death. This is due to the fact that they only eat fresh algae and only certain types of algae. Despite the fact that cucumbers appear to be the most frequently returned search result on Google, I have never had to go after them. My most successful batch of otos, on the other hand, would gobble up blanched peas. Take a handful of frozen peas (without salt), place them in a small bowl of water, microwave them for about 8 seconds, and then place them in ice water to cool down (this helps them sink). After that, de-shell the peas and feed them to the otos (pigs).
