Perch is the popular name for a freshwater ray-finned fish with two caudal fins, a compact body, and large anal spines. They are carnivorous fish most frequently found in little ponds, lakes, rivers, or canals. These fish eat on smaller fish, shrimp, or insect larvae but may be caught with almost any bait.
Copepods, water fleas, and other tiny crustaceans are often eaten by larval yellow perch. Larger things, such as aquatic bug larvae and larval fish, are quickly eaten by juveniles. Perch also love eating tiny fish, crayfish, worms, and slugs before the end of their first growing season. Adults continue to consume all of these foods but incorporate more fish as they grow. Insects and Animals
Young perch eat phytoplankton, zooplankton, and other small insects such as mealworms, bluegill, leeches, minnows, shrimp, flies, maggots, prawns, pike, worms, wax worms, frogs, gobies, dead fish, tadpoles, and mosquito larvae. As a perch becomes older, it will feast on larger prey. A mealworm, which is the juvenile larva of a beetle, is an excellent bait for both young and older perch. Perch can eat eggs, salmon eggs, ducklings, crickets, bacon, hot dogs, dead minnows.
Amphibians
A perch will strike just about any small moving target in the water. Perch like to eat amphibians such as newts or salamanders. Additionally, in cold weather or ice fishing, leeches can be used to catch perch.
Crayfish
A crayfish is a tiny crustacean that is no larger than 3 to 5 inches. It’s part of a perch’s diet, and It inhabits the bottoms of rivers, ponds and lakes.
What Perch Do Not Eat
Perches are pure carnivores in nature, and they do not eat any green product such as grass, string algae, algae, leaves or other aquatic plants. Perch also do not eat fruits and vegetables. Due to their small size, perch cannot eat big fishes such as trout, salmon or catfish.
