What Polar Bears Look Like?

The polar bear is an incredibly large animal with a relatively small head, long neck, short rounded ears, and a short tail. It can reach up to 5.3 feet shoulder length and about 2.2-2.5 meters in length. The adult polar bear can weigh an average of 900-1500 pounds. The female counterparts are lighter, with an average weight of 330-650 pounds. 

Their white fur helps them to camouflage into their environment. Unlike human hair, the fur consists of hollow tubes that reflect sunlight and appear white. Interestingly the skin is black; the skin coat has no white pigment at all. The thick body fat and double-layered coat under the skin that acts as insulation. It helps to survive in the cold arctic air.

The polar bear has semi-webbed paws of about a foot in diameter and is equipped with large, curved sharp claws. Their forepaws act as large paddles, whereas the hind paws serve as rudders during swimming. The paws have hairy soles for insulation and uneven skin to facilitate their moment across ice fields. The tail is comparatively short and about 3-5 inches in length. Polar bears have a strong sense of smell that can smell their prey up to a kilometer distance.
