What Do Porpoises Eat? - Kylon Powell

Writer John Campbell

Porpoises are carnivorous aquatic mammals because they feed on aquatic animals such as fishes, crabs, and lobsters present in the water for survival. Porpoises are shy mammals because they don’t face humans and boats easily as they prefer to live mostly in water. Porpoises are similar in appearance to dolphins.

There are almost six porpoises species found all around the globe. They mostly live in estuaries, bays, harbors, and in fjords. They can live in any environment and climate from coastal to tropical and temperate regions. They mostly prefer to live in the Northern oceans.

The average size of a porpoise ranges between 5.5 feet to 6 feet. Their average size is 80kg to 110 kg. A porpoise can live for 8 to 10 years.

Aquatic animals

Porpoises feed on many small aquatic animals. Porpoises mostly feed on non-spiny fishes such as codfish, herring, mackerel, sardines, and whiting’s. They also eat octopus and squid occasionally. Mullet fish and catfish are their favorite food. They hunt their food by using echolocation in water. They mostly hunt aquatic animals near the surface of the water.

Porpoises can eat shrimp, snails, and crabs. Porpoises like the day hunt at night and they hunt small fishes at night. In a day, they can hunt up to 550 small fishes, and they eat with continuity. Porpoises also eat deep-ocean jellyfish and salmon.

In captivity, porpoises eat non-spiny fishes and small crustaceans such as brine shrimps, crabs, copepods, and much more.

What porpoises don’t eat?

Porpoises don’t eat sharks and dolphins, because sharks eat porpoises and dolphins kill porpoises. They don’t eat orcas because they are poisonous. Porpoises don’t feed on aquatic plants and aquatic vegetation. Porpoises don’t eat algae, algae flakes, humans, and so on.
