Writer Gabriel Cooper

Adult and infant raccoon sounds can comprise a variety of more than 100 different noises, ranging from the way they communicate with one another to the sounds they produce when investigating your attic or crawlspace. They are quite vocal creatures, both as adults and as young children.

When they’re trying to get inside your home, you might hear them rustling and darting around, and you might also hear them wandering across your roof. Keep in mind that because they are most active at night, this is the time of day when you are most likely to hear them as they search for potential den sites or begin to construct one.

Vocal Sounds

Chittering, humming, snorting, growling, snapping, whining, and screaming are all common sounds made by Raccoons of all ages. They can also be heard in the wild making their own chittering sound. Baby raccoon noises could include whining, yowling, and sobbing, amongst various expressions. When raccoons communicate with one another, it’s possible that they make a whistle similar to that of a screech owl.

When it comes to finding food, raccoons follow their noses, which is why they’re frequently found foraging through garbage cans and dumpsters. With the exception of being less common during the daytime due to their nocturnal habits, their daytime vocalizations are identical to those they emit at night. Although it is difficult to tell the difference between a rat in the attic and a raccoon in the attic if you are not able to catch them in the process of doing anything, such as pushing over your trash, it is possible to tell the difference.
