Red claw crabs are scavenger omnivores. There’s a fact about them, “They can eat anything and everything” from algae, plants matter to bugs to small and weak fishes, shrimps, worms, etc. They are native to Asian Continent. Red claw crabs have opportunistic behavior because they eat whatever they see. Red claw crabs are nocturnal and are mostly hidden somewhere in dark areas.

The average lifespan of red claw crabs is around 3 to 4 years, and Red king crabs can live up to 20 years. Their maximum size is about 10cm. Male crabs have larger and bright red crabs and female crabs have dark color claws, so it’s easy to identify the sex. They don’t have a backbone, so they are invertebrate species. They are arthropods. They cannot survive out of water for long. They’ll die due to dehydration.

Aquatic species

Red claw crabs can eat small and slow-moving fishes like dwarf pygmy goby, minnows, chubs, shiners, and dace. Red claw crabs can eat shrimp pellets, shrimp granules, shrimps like cherry shrimp, ghost shrimp, and brine shrimps. Red claw crabs also eat snails and other slow-moving insects and worms, like mealworms, frozen bloodworms, earthworms, etc.

Plankton

As they are omnivores, they also forage on plant matter. Red claw crabs can eat underwater plants, algae, vegetables, and fruits. They get nutrients from plant roots, leaves, and seeds, etc. Red claw crabs also eat celery and crab food.

In plants, Red claw crabs mostly eat java fern, baby tears, duckweed, Christmas moss, shredding plants, frogbit, thread leaf java fern, etc. Red claw crabs also eat vegetables like spinach, leafy greens, squash, green beans, lettuce, and peas, etc.

They can even forage on their own discarded exoskeleton as a source of calcium.

Red claw crabs can’t eat other crabs. They don’t attack big fishes and sharks.
