What Do Ribbon Snakes Eat?

Ribbon snakes are said to be carnivorous reptiles because they eat different animals and insects for their survival. Ribbon snake’s diet consists of small fish, spiders, toads, rodents such as mice and rats. These snakes are shy and are nonpoisonous.

Ribbon snakes are native to eastern North America and are found throughout Eastern America. They are also found in the piedmont and coastal plains. They love to live in wet regions and climates such as wet woodlands, lakes, streams, marsh areas, and creek beds. The size of an adult ribbon snake is about 18-26 inches in length and it can grow up to 41 inches. The average size of a ribbon snake is about 150g. The average lifespan of a ribbon snake is about 20 years. The bite of a ribbon snake is painful but it doesn’t kill any humans.

Insects and animals

Ribbon snakes can eat different insects and animals for their proper living. Also, Ribbon snakes can eat mammals, birds, large amphibians, and reptiles. Ribbon snakes will eat frogs, adult, and young toads, spiders, and salamanders. Ribbon snakes can eat mice, crickets, grasshoppers, tadpoles, and muskrats. 

Ribbon snakes can eat small fish, newts, the meat of different animals, and ants. Ribbon snakes feed two or three times per week. They hunt and swallow the whole prey. In winter when ribbon snakes hibernate, they can live easily for 2-3 months without eating. Ribbon snakes also eat snails, leeches, and slugs.

In the wild, ribbon snakes eat toads, newts, small fish, spiders, mealworms, caterpillars, salamanders, and a great variety of other insects. Ribbon snakes mainly eat cold-blooded animals and sometimes when there is no food, they eat warm-blooded prey. 

What ribbon snakes don’t eat

Ribbon snakes don’t like to eat plants, fruits, and vegetation. They only use plants and vegetation for shelter and to catch their food. Ribbon snakes don’t like to eat earthworms but sometimes they eat earthworms.
