What do sharks hunt? - Kylon Powell
Sarah Silva
Sharks hunt differently when they want to feed compared to when they are just swimming around. Sharks’ favorite prey is a wide range of fish, squid, and crustaceans. They also hunt mammals like seals, sea lions, and whales for food. After the shark catches its prey it swallows it whole without chewing it. A great white shark’s teeth have triangular cusps that easily tear prey into bite-size pieces to swallow.

There are a number of different species of shark and all of them have one thing in common, they all can sense body heat. This is how sharks find their prey underwater. Some sharks hunt alone, but many of the larger species hunt in packs. The bigger sharks will even team up with smaller sharks to take down larger prey. Sharks do not hunt every day, so when they come across a food source, they gorge themselves until they can eat no more.
One thing that many people do not know about sharks is that they are scavengers. If you are ever in an area where there has been a shark attack and people were killed, look out for the shark returning to feed on the bodies. Sharks are like vultures and will often return to feed on dead bodies once they are bloated with water and ready to sink to the bottom of the ocean floor.
Sharks have a large number of sharp teeth which enable them to break through the shells of their prey. Their teeth are very hard and some species such as Great White Sharks have rows upon rows of teeth that never stop growing. Because these teeth are very hard, it takes quite a lot for them to break off or fall out.
