The primary food source for spotted lanternflies is plant sap. They like Ailanthus trees (also known as the “tree of heaven”), walnuts, and grapevines as their first choices, most other hardwood trees as their second choices, and pine trees as their third or fourth choices. The spotted lanternfly consumes plants by sucking sap from the leaves, stems, and trunks of the plants that it feeds upon.
It consumes more sap than it can handle and excretes the majority of it. This secretion, known as “honeydew,” can cause mold to grow or attract other insects, causing severe damage to the tree.
Although spotted lanternflies do not bite or sting humans, they are a severe problem. They are a significant agricultural danger to plants and trees such as grapes, hops, and hardwoods, inflicting significant economic harm.
Spotted lanternflies cause a lot of havoc. The Spotted Lanternfly consumes trees, grapes, hops, vegetable plants, flowers, and nearly any plant in its path. They do not bite or sting, but they can swarm and make it uncomfortable to stay outside in contaminated places.
Spotted lanternflies eat grapevines, maple trees, black walnut, birch, willow, and other trees that are commercially valuable.
