What Do Stoats Eat? - Kylon Powell

Find Out What Stoats Eat

Stoats are mostly carnivorous, and their principal food source is the rabbit, despite the fact that they are many times their own weight. Stoats eat insects, fish, reptiles, amphibians, and other invertebrates, among other things.

When it comes to killing animals, the stoat is capable of taking down animals that are much larger than it. When it acquires more meat than it can consume in a single sitting, it engages in “surplus killing,” storing the excess flesh for later use. Stoats are fearsome predators who can run at speeds of up to 20 miles per hour when hunting for their prey.

It has been discovered that in the majority of areas where weasels and stoats coexist, the weasel prefers smaller prey and the stoat prefers somewhat larger prey. Male stoats are typically larger in size than female stoats, and they prey on larger prey.

Stoats not only kill for food, but they also kill for sport, which is a sad fact. You will most likely find numerous dead chickens and only one or two that have been partially eaten if a stoat attacks them.

Since stoats are capable of attacking large creatures twice their own size, they can easily take down dogs and cats that are several times their own size.

Animals and Insects

Stoats are generalist predators that prey on a variety of prey. Stoats will eat birds, rodents, insects, freshwater crayfish, roadkill, hedgehogs, lizards, rats, rabbits, hares, and fish.

Stoats eat snakes, lemmings, geckos, chipmunks, rats, possums, birds, bird eggs, bats, ducks, ducklings, eggs, chicken eggs, frogs, goldfish, hedgehogs, hens, kiwis, mice, moles, pond, fish, pigeons, tui, takahe, and squirrels.

Fruits and Vegetables

Stoats only consume fruits when the food is in scarcity. Stoats also eat nuts. They don’t feed on vegetables. They prey mostly on small mammals, particularly rabbits and water voles, which are numerous in the areas where they can be found in large numbers.

What stoats don’t eat?

Stoats are carnivores so they are meat-eaters. Stoats don’t eat any plants or vegetables.
