Because they are constantly growing, they have to catch and eat their prey in the water bodies. Having adapted to carnivorous dietary habits, sturgeon can feed on a diverse diet including insects. Being the benthic feeders, sturgeons enjoy a multitude of food items found at the bottom. Here, we’ll look at “What do sturgeon eat” to learn more about their diet!

Sturgeon swims around the sea to detect its prey with the help of its barbels. These barbels help them in searching for the food in the water. Once they’ve located the prey, the sturgeon would rather suck the food instead of taking a bite.

That being said, sturgeon eat fish, crayfish, shrimp, snails, crab, squid, and other fish. Their diet is varied which includes small aquatic fishes as well as insects.

Hence, sturgeon eat zebra mussels, dead fish, live fish, goldfish, koi, newts, zebra mussels, and minnows. Additionally, they are insectivores as well – feasting on a multitude of insects and bugs. Sturgeon eat worms, boilies, anchovies, meat, and salmon eggs if they happen to find them in proximity.

Sturgeons are characterized by their carnivorous dietary habits. Hence, you wouldn’t see them foraging vegetation or plants. Their primary diet consists of animal feeding exclusively! This is why sturgeons don’t eat plants, algae, vegetation, fruit, or vegetables!
