What Do Weevils Look Like?

Writer Caleb Butler

Weevils are beetle-like insects that belong to “Arthropoda” and a superclass called “Curculionoidea.” Weevils contaminate overrun food by feces, which is more dangerous than eating the crops and packaging. They can be spotted with their elongated head and projecting noses with over 97,000 species.

They are classified into various categories like rice weevils, cowpea weevils, boil weevils, maize weevils, and granary weevils. Weevils are categorized as pests because they can damage crops. However, they are not harmful to humans.

What Weevils Look Like?

These beetle-like insects are small in length with an approximate size of 6mm to 90 mm. Weevils are herbivorous, and they feed on crops, grains, and rice. It comes with a round, black body and elongated snouts. The easiest way to identify weevils is by their long snouts and an oval body.

The external structure of a weevil is composed of dorsal, ventral, and lateral parts. At the same time, genitalia is used to distinguish between male and female weevils.

Usually, weevils are black, olive-brown, grey, or reddish undertone, but they can not fly. At the same time, the thorax region is covered with orange hairs. It also has an antenna’s and legs which are black. Their appearance may vary slightly with different types of weevils. The cotton weevils usually lay eggs within the cotton ball, and the larvae cover the whole cotton by eating it. The larvae are soft and white-cream color which gives it an appearance of maggots.

It is commonly thought that weevils are highly toxic, but they won’t harm you even if you eat them. However, they can contaminate food with their feces, so it’s better to prevent it. These pests can ruin crops along with rice and grains that need to be discarded immediately.
