What Do Zebra Mussels Eat?

Writer Rachel Davis

Zebra mussels are recognized as invasive, fingernail-sized mollusk that is native to freshwaters. The black, zigzagged stripes on each shell give them their name. The zebra mussel is a freshwater mussel that is modest in size. The species was once native to the lakes of southern Russia and Ukraine, but it was mistakenly brought to many other places and has since become an invasive species in many nations across the world.

Animals and insects

Zebra mussels are so small, and they live mainly in lakes, so they can’t eat the animals and insects, but zebra mussels have few natural predators. However, it has been observed that they are eaten by a variety of fish and diving ducks.

Fruits and Vegetables

Zebra mussels are unique aquatic animals that are mainly found in freshwaters. So due to aquatic animals, they don’t eat fruits and vegetables.

Zebra mussels are filter feeders, meaning they take in water and filter out the nutrients they require. Algae, which are minute aquatic plants, are filtered out of the water by zebra mussels. Zebra mussels are suspension feeders, sifting the water and straining out food items. Zebra mussels eat phytoplankton, small zooplankton, big bacteria, and organic debris. Many species rely on phytoplankton and zooplankton for survival because they form the foundation of the aquatic food chain.

What  Zebra mussels don’t eat

The Zebra mussels are tiny in size, so they don’t eat fish. But some of the aquatic animals play a localized role to control the Zebra mussel’s population. The pumpkinseed sunfish, a native panfish found in shallow lake waters, is seemingly fond of eating Zebra mussels. 52.9 percent of blue catfish, Ictalurus furcatus; 48.2 percent of the freshwater drum, Aplodinotus grunniens; and 100 percent of adult redear sunfish, Lepomis microlophus, ate zebra mussels.
