What Is A Barra Engine?
John Campbell
Introduced in the BA-series of the Ford Falcon in 2002, the 4.0-liter 6-cylinder Barra motor has experienced massive growth in both Ford itself as well as within the modified automobile scene. Dual-overhead-cam Barra is now a highly loved engine in Australia due to its huge potential for horsepower and bulletproof power that makes it the perfect engine for builds with high horsepower.

Silky Terrier Dog Breed Playing AroundJust a couple of months ago, we witnessed a Barra-powered Tunnel Vision-built FG Falcon makeover 1000kW at the rear wheels, based on the factory block and head of the cylinder. There aren’t many engines with these power numbers without an aftermarket head or block. This is an ordinary streetcar! Then there are Barra motors that are used in race vehicles, such as the Dion Amato’s Dodge Avenger, that spin at up to 10,000rpm and produce more than 2000hp, again using the block and head from the factory.
Barras aren’t just incompetent with the built bottom end. A factory bottom-end XR6 Turbo will run nines with only head studs valve springs, and fuel system modifications. This Turbo Taxi full-weight FG Falcon ran 11.0 on the bottom-end of a less powerful stock LPG motor that was running LPG fuel. It was 12.0 on a motor that is factory aspirated by Barra which is one of the weakest Barra motors.
Since that the Barra was only available only in Australia It doesn’t have the massive aftermarket support that comes with similar to an LS engine that allows you to purchase the Dart or similar blocks, and the 2JZ and the RB-series six-cylinder engines. But, the demand for the Barra has been increasing in America and is expected to grow with the advent of cars such as that of the Mighty Car Mods Cresta and Ben Paganoni’s FPV F6 ute taking part at Hot Rod Drag Week this year.
Haltech has also released a plug-and-play ECU that is compatible with Barra-powered Falcons that control the vehicle’s normal functions and also provides the same tuning capabilities as the traditional Haltech ECU. Another Australian firm that’s big on Barra tunes is Plazmaman which produces all kinds of intake manifolds, from beautiful intake manifolds to valve springs and intercoolers and pipework.
