What is a poppet valve?

Writer David Wilson

What is a poppet valve and what does it do?

Poppet valves are used in gasoline engines to control the admission and rejection of intake and exhaust gases to the cylinders. The valve, which is made up of a disk with a tapered edge attached to a shank, is held against the tapered seat in the illustration (right center).

What is the purpose of a poppet?

Poppet valves have a mushroom-shaped head and a slender stem. They’re frequently found in engines. They actually work by opening as well as closing the intake and exhaust ports that are in the cylinder head when used in a piston engine. The valves are moved by the engine using cams and cam followers to push on the stems.

What is the function of a poppet check valve?

A spring holds the poppet in place. When a poppet valve’s cracking pressure is reached, the spring compresses, pushing the poppet away from an O-ring at the inlet and allowing fluid to flow straight through the valve.

What is the function of a poppet solenoid valve?

The orifice of a poppet valve is opened and closed by raising and lowering a sealing surface onto the orifice. The valve is usually held in the closed position by an internal spring. The sealing surface lifts off the orifice when the spring force is overcome, and the valve opens.

How can you tell if a valve is a poppet valve?

A poppet valve, similar to a check valve but located within a valve body box. Which can be identified when reading a hydraulic schematic by the ball and seat. A Poppet valve symbol can be found in Figure 1. A solenoid-operated, 3 way 2 position (3/2), spring-return poppet valve is the full description of the valve shown.

What are the different kinds of poppet valves?

Two types of poppet valves are commonly used for the purpose: two way normally closed valves and two way normally opened valves. In the first, the valve’s stem pushes the head away from its seating, allowing fluid to flow through. In normal circumstances, these valves remain closed.
