What is a valve seat?
David Wilson
What exactly is the function of a valve seat?
The Valve Seat is the seat for the air intake and exhaust valves, to put it simply. It is the part that makes contact with the valve and keeps the combustion chamber airtight.
What does it mean when a valve seat is dropped?
Valve seats fall out because the seat area is either too large or the aluminum head expands faster than the steel. Once you’ve dropped a seal, it’s up to the machinist to get the fit right; hopefully, the seat didn’t enlarge the recess too much. For each valve size, there is only one seat size.
What is the difference between a valve stem and a valve seat?
Valve seats are frequently made by pressing an approximately cylindrical piece of a hardened metal alloy, such as Stellite, into a cast depression in a cylinder head above each eventual valve stem position, and then machining a conical-section surface into the valve seat that will mate with a corresponding valve stem position.
Is there a difference between a valve seat and a seal?
By opening, closing, or partially obstructing passageways, a valve regulates, directs, or controls the flow of media. To close the passageway and create a leak-tight seal, an elastomer valve seat or seal is required.
What are the differences between the two types of valve seats?
Valve seats come in two varieties: integral and insert, similar to valve guides. The casting includes integral seats. Insert seats are always used in aluminum cylinder heads and are pressed into the head.
What causes damage to the valve seat?
In the most extreme cases, the valve can become stuck, unable to close or open, and as the torque is increased, the seat can be torn to pieces inside the valve, resulting in mechanical failure. This is why picking the right material for the job is so crucial.
