Newspaper and a carpet liner are the best substrate options for your bearded dragon’s terrarium. Sand is an option, but it should be used with extreme caution. If your bearded dragon is a regular sand eater, it may be time to make a switch. Ceramic tiles can also be used, but they are more expensive to install and more difficult to walk on.

Is sand or carpet better for bearded dragons?

Young bearded dragons should not be kept on sand or any other loose substrate. It’s better to use newspaper, paper towels, or reptile carpet (watch for loose thread or areas that could snag the dragon’s toenails).
