What is the difference between bmw sdrive and xdrive?

Writer Emily Cortez

What is the difference between xDrive and BMW’s regular Sdrive models? It comes down to how much power is delivered to each axle. With Sdrive, power goes to the rear wheels only, while xDrive sends power to all four. That means that an xDrive model will be better equipped to handle slippery surfaces and poor weather conditions, as well as be more stable when traveling at high speeds.

BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive system is used in all but two of this carmaker’s vehicles. That means that the S60 and V70 models are the only cars you can buy from BMW at present, which offer rear-wheel drive as standard (the 1 Series ActiveE is an electric model and the M6 is available with four- or two-wheel drive).

The idea behind xDrive – as we discussed in our comparo between an Audi A4 quattro and a BMW 3 Series xDrive recently – is to utilise electronic control systems to ensure power distribution and traction levels should always be optimised for safety and performance. It also allows the car maker to both reduce weight removing components such as propshafts and differentials, and to offer a more versatile range of models.

The heart of xDrive is the electronically controlled centre differential (xDCT), which is able to split drive 50:50 front-to-rear, or vary the split as conditions demand. Up to 100 percent of torque can be directed to either axle, meaning that the car can maintain good traction even on slippery surfaces. The system also includes Hill Descent Control for safe downhill driving, and Brake Drying and Brake Standby for improved stopping power in wet weather.

If you are looking for a BMW that can handle any terrain or condition, then the xDrive models are the ones to go for. However, bear in mind that they are a little more expensive than Sdrive counterparts are. For a truly dynamic driving experience, though, there is simply no substitute for xDrive.
