Where do budgies sleep? - Kylon Powell

Writer Rachel Davis

In the wild, budgies are most at home in trees. They typically choose a hollow tree to sleep in during the night, but if no suitable tree is available, they sleep in branches. This means that it is possible to train your pet budgie (or parakeet) to sleep on its play gym or cage at night instead of in a cage.

Budgies will sleep on the porch at first but they are also likely to want to move down onto the floor of their cage because they want to be closer to you. Sometimes, it is helpful to place a piece of carpet over the base of part of your bird’s cage. How clean you keep the base of the cage is up to you. Budgies enjoy chewing wood and other things so if there is some litter on the floor of your bird’s cage within her reach, she will probably peck at it and make a mess.
When you’re out during the day, your budgerigar will often look for a safe, quiet place to rest. Budgies love to spend time on their perches, but they sleep in the safety of their cages at night. If you have more than one pet, and no cage is big enough for all of them, you may hear soft chirps as your feathered family members call to each other.

They will sleep all day if you let them. But since they sleep during the day and need to stay awake during the night, they don’t want to sleep alone. Sometimes budgies will sleep with other budgies even if they are not mates. Others will sleep with parrotlets or cockatiels or other budgies. Whichever bird you have, it is best if you have more than one bird so that your pet won’t be all alone when he needs his sleep.
