Where do deer sleep at night?
Andrew Davis
Deer sleep under trees most often. Remember also that deer are not just wild animals, they are also game animals. A good hunter will not just know where deer live, but also where they sleep. They do have fixed bedding sites. They will return to these locations every night. It is usually a small opening in the brush or a clear cut. Bedding sites may be located next to a stream or pond with food and cover present. Food plots are not required by deer in order for them to survive. Deer will bed down during the day and become more active in the evening and at night.

Depending on weather conditions, deer may also be active during the mid-day hours, especially when food sources are not readily available. The ideal habitat for deer provides abundant food sources, thick cover, and a nearby body of water. Although spread across North America, white-tailed deer are found in every state but Alaska.
How do you tell if deer are around?
The best way to observe deer is at night with a spotlight. You can also watch for deer droppings, deer tracks, and scrape marks on tree trunks.
Detecting deer movement and patterns of use near your property is a critical step in managing deer-human interactions. From the first sign to impact, it is necessary to monitor deer activity. It is impossible to depend on the presence of deer alone for judging if it is an ideal time to plant, fertilize, spray, or harvest on your property.
Do deer recognize humans?
DEER are territorial animals and will come running when they notice a human. There have been cases in which deer have recognized their feeder and stood at a distance, but no published studies exist to confirm such interactions.
