Where do hens sleep? - Kylon Powell

Hens are known for being great layers of eggs, but not many people know that they also like to sleep. Hens usually sleep on the ground in a nest that they create themselves. They will usually make their nests near or under something warm, such as a heating vent or the sun, to get some warmth.

Hens can do this because they have special sleeping habits, which allow them to keep one eye open at all times so that they can watch for predators while they sleep. Hens prefer to have at least 8 inches (20 cm) of space per bird in their sleeping area, so there should be enough room for all the hens to comfortably spread out. The floor of the coop should be covered with straw, wood shavings, or similar material to provide insulation and comfort. A nesting box should also be provided for each hen; this is a small enclosed space where she can lay her eggs without being disturbed.
Hens are well known for their intelligence, problem-solving skills, and communicative abilities. All hens are highly social, living in close-knit groups where they spend most of the day pecking at the ground or preening each other. If left outside all day, hens will quickly scatter to find food so they must be housed near to their coop.
It is because of this natural behavior that hens were first domesticated – ancient people observed flocks of barnyard fowl staying near their homes, eating insects and seeds before returning to roost at nightfall.
