Where do lions sleep? - Kylon Powell

Writer Sarah Silva

Lions live in dens and usually sleep in caves because the rocks help to prevent the animal from freezing. These animals have a terrific sense of smell and can smell a carcass from many miles away. Once they find their prey, they group together and attack it as a team, with one larger lion attacking from behind.

Lions sleep up to 20 hours a day. Most lions in captivity are active throughout the day, with peaks of activity in the morning and late afternoon. Though lions do take several naps each day, one of their most common daily activities is lying down to rest. Lions also bask in the sun, which helps them regulate their body heat on hot days. Lions have an average lifespan of 10-16 years in captivity.

Lions are the only big cats that live in groups. Their social organization is similar to that of baboons; each lion’s territory is smaller than its home range, while its home range overlaps those of other lions. The pride consists of two or more related females, their cubs and a coalition of males. Male lions outside the pride tend to form loose associations with each other, sometimes referred to as coalitions. These coalitions are typically small, but can be larger on occasion. Lions are protected by a group-wide dominance hierarchy that determines who gets access to food and mates.

What attributes does a lion have?

Lions have long been a symbol of power, courage and strength. In ancient Egypt, the pharaohs used the image of the lion in everything from jewelry to funerary art to fortify their rule and strengthen their standing with the gods. Today, lions are still linked with royalty and continue to lend their strength in logos, flags and other parts of culture.
