Reindeer are hoofed mammals that live in the northern regions of the world. They are related to deer, elk, and caribou. There are two types of reindeer: Tundra reindeer or “caribou” which are found in North America, Europe Russia, and Greenland; and Arctic tundra reindeer which are found in North America and Eurasia.
Reindeer sleeps on the ground in sheltered areas such as under trees, in gullies, or in the lee of rocks. They often lay their heads on each other to form a “nest” and sleep together in large groups. Baby reindeer sleep with their mothers until they are about a year old.
Reindeer live in herds which consist of females, their young, and a few males. The males keep watch over the herd while the females feed. Reindeer are primarily grazers and eat grass, moss, lichen, and shrubs. They also drink water but can get most of the water they need from the plants they eat.
Reindeer are an important part of the environment in the arctic. They are a food source for polar bears, wolves, and humans. Caribou is also an important part of the diet for many aboriginal people who live in Canada’s North. The fur from reindeer has been used to make clothes, shoes and tents for centuries.
Reindeer are very hardy animals that can live in harsh environments and eat many types of plants. They can also live in very cold and hot climates and survive for long periods without food.
They are used to help people in the arctic by pulling their sleds and other things. They were first used as pack animals during the early 15th century by the Natives of North America. Reindeer are also used in races and reindeer games.

The reindeer’s fur is hollow which allows for insulation from the harsh cold climate in their environment. In some regions, reindeer have been known to dig through the snow to find food during winter seasons when there is a lack of vegetation on the surface of their range.
