Roosters are known for their cock-a-doodle-doos, but where do roosters sleep? It may come as a surprise to learn that roosters actually sleep very little and in short spurts. Roosters don’t need much shut-eye because they tend to be more active when it’s dark outside. They also express themselves through their coos more at this time of day.
In fact, roosters can even fall asleep on one foot! Roosters sleep during the day in a variety of ways. They may sit down or stand up as they lean against something, even taking short naps while standing. It’s not unusual to see a rooster perched on fences, roofs, or other elevated surfaces.
Roosters also enjoy sitting in the grass with their legs folded under them. Roosters are natural-born hunters who will hunt for food even when they are sleeping! Roosters have been known to wake up mid-snooze and jump up to search for “prey”.
This is something experts call “rooster dreams”, which they say are common in active breeds of roosters. Roosters will even sleep on their backs! It’s unusual to see a rooster flat on his back, but it is possible. Experts say that if you do find your rooster snoozing this way, the reason may be that he is too hot.
Roosters are very sensitive to changes in temperature and need to take frequent rests in the shade or under a fan. Roosters have been known to fall asleep standing on one leg if they get overheated, so keep an eye on them during the hottest parts of the day. It’s also helpful for busy chicken owners to give their roosters some “alone time” in a coop or dark place during the day so they can get more rest.
A tired, sleepy rooster is a good rooster! Sleepy roosters make for happy chicken keepers. Remember that chickens (and humans!) need about 8 hours of sleep each night, so make sure your rooster gets his beauty sleep!
