During winter wasps hide in undisturbed, warm areas to survive the cold months. Sometimes hives are built underground or in cavities where it is warmer, but some wasp will die over winter and only emerge when the weather warms up.
Wasps and other insects actually do hibernate, so they can survive the coldest temperatures by slowing down their metabolism and heart rate. This means that you would not be able to tell if a wasp has died of old age rather than the cold by looking for signs of movement because they would be just as likely to move after death unless you could feel a pulse!
Why do wasps migrate during winter months?
Wasps don’t migrate as such, but some wasp populations do gradually move away from an area during winter for a number of reasons. During the cold season, there is less food around and this means that it may not be worth the effort to stay in an area where food is scarce. Wasps also have a greater need to find somewhere warm during winter so will move towards the sun wherever possible. Something which wasp colonies are very good at doing.
How do wasps migrate in the winter month?
Wasps do not migrate in the same way that many other insects do. Some wasp colonies can travel very great distances across the land on foot, but this is after they have become established in a new area. Because of their size, some wasp will fly short distances or hitchhike on something which is flying (like birds) to get to another location more quickly. If only small numbers of wasps are traveling then they may decide to take an indirect route by flying higher up where it is warmer and following areas of warm air so they do not use too much energy flying through the cold air.
When do wasp return in the winter month?
If it is too cold for wasps to stay where they are then they will gradually head towards the warmth. This means that during springtime when temperatures are warmer, the wasp population will gradually return to an area.
