Where do whales sleep? - Kylon Powell
Sarah Silva
Whales sleep in the water. When resting, whales are typically found at the surface. Some species will occasionally sleep underwater if the timing is convenient for them. Whales must rest, so when the weather turns bad, or food sources are scarce, resting in deep water can provide shelter from the elements and room to breathe comfortably.

Most baleen whales, like the massive blue whale, spend the majority of their lives in the water while they sleep. Some species of toothed whales, for example, narwhals, and beluga whales spend part of their time in the water while they sleep. Sperm whales spend the most time asleep of any marine mammal. Unlike other whales, they sleep so deeply that they rarely surface at night or even breathe.
Whales aside from those that are pregnant do not need to breathe while sleeping, due to their ability to hold their breath for long periods of time. Due to this fact, whales can often be seen sleeping at the surface of the water. The behavior of whales is dependent on their environment and feeding habits, so they may hunt while asleep or socialize with other whales if they are in an area where food cannot be found.
Do whales give birth?
Whales give birth to their young in warm coastal waters. A typical pregnancy lasts about a year and begins with the birth of a single calf. An infant whale nurses for about 6 months before it’s weaned, at which point its mother becomes fertile again.
Do whales fart?
Yes, they do fart and they do burp. Whales are air-breathing mammals, just like land mammals and humans, whales consume their lungs full of air when they breathe. If a whale’s body doesn’t have a way to get rid of the excess gas that it generates by breathing, it would cause the whale’s stomach to expand and make them very sick. So whales release this extra energy as gas which is made up of water vapor, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen. These gases are what makeup farts or burps.
