Where do Wombats Sleep? - Kylon Powell
John Campbell
Wombats are nocturnal animals and spend most of the day sleeping in their burrows. They have very good sense of hearing and smell which helps them to avoid predators. Their burrows can be up to 30 meters long with many chambers and a labyrinth of tunnels. They often have several entrances and exits which helps them to escape quickly.
They are herbivores and they feed on grasses, sedges, herbs, bark and roots which is mostly found near their burrows. They have a very slow metabolism so it can go for weeks without food or water.
Wombats use their strong front teeth to chew the vegetation before swallowing it. They have broad, strong flat back feet with four toes and long claws which helps them to rip up grasses.
They are good water drinkers but they usually get enough of the moisture from their food as well as from dew or morning mist. When there is a drought in the land, wombats dig deeper burrows so that they can avoid the heat and go without food or water for weeks.
Wombats are shy animals that are mostly active in early mornings or late afternoons. They are very good diggers, using their strong front legs to dig out burrows in river banks. The burrow is usually at least 1 meter underground with several entrances and a network of tunnels.
Wombats also use their burrows to escape from the hot sun and the predators including dingoes, foxes and wild dogs. They are very strong diggers and can dive into a hole headfirst at great speeds with amazing accuracy too. They can travel around 8 kilometers in one night while foraging for food or looking for a new burrow. They also leave their cubs in safe burrows when they go out foraging and they can travel quite long distances to find food as well especially during the drought season.
Wombats are mostly active at night time and resting during the day. They use their strong sense of smell and hearing to identify predators that might be in the area before they dive into their burrows. They have a very slow metabolism so they can go without food or water for weeks if needed.
