Who Makes Generac Engines? - Kylon Powell

Writer Sarah Silva

There is a story behind the Generac story, as well as its relationship with other brands. Generac is a Wisconsin-based business that was founded in the year 1959. At first, Craftsman portable generators were manufactured by Generac for companies such as Sears. With more than 60 years of experience in the business, they have made their name by providing top-quality generators. They have a range of sizes, from the smallest portable generator to larger standby generators, which are commonly used for commercial.

Generac’s offerings include commercial and residential Standby Generators mobile generators mounted on trailers, high-quality light towers, as well as power washers.

Briggs & Stratton and Generac have a history that is shared between them.

The year 2001 was when Briggs bought Generac Portable Products from New York-based investment company Beacon Group. The company then rebranded as Briggs & Stratton Power Products and was a competitor to Generac with certain products. It was a subsidiary of the Beacon Group that had purchased the Consumer Products division, Generac Power Systems, in 1998.

Prior to that, Generac had a non-compete agreement with the Beacon Group. After the agreement expired in 1998, it allowed Generac to grow their business in the market of portable generators according to the documents that were filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

Generac is currently an affiliate that is part of Generac Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: GNRC). Generac was listed on the stock exchange in 2010 and is among the biggest generator manufacturers in the market. Generac generators are sold to retail stores across the globe and are marketed to consumers to customers for their performance and quality. Generac is the Generac brand is often found on commercial generators and has in recent times been heavily marketing to the consumer market of home standby generators.

Another generator brand that is popular, DeWalt is a division to Stanley, Black and Decker is recognized as a U.S.-based tool and power equipment maker. However, their generator range isn’t all manufactured entirely in the U.S. and is manufactured under license by Generac.

It is possible to ask the different players who are the engine builders used in Generac generators? According to the Portable Generator FAQs, their engines are manufactured through Generac Power Systems, a manufacturing firm with manufacturing factories located in Eagle as well as Whitewater, Wisconsin. It says they are manufactured in-house by Generac in its Whitewater factory, but there is conflicting evidence that certain engines are manufactured in China, in which Briggs & Stratton has a manufacturing facility.

Problems with Generac as well as Briggs & Stratton were reported in August of 2020 at the time Generac Power Systems applied to purchase a few Briggs & Stratton Corporation product lines in the wake of B&S’s July filing in the matter of Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

The squabble between the two rival companies, which have headquarters only 20 miles apart is the consequence of two different ways of thinking about business: one is an interest in innovation and technology; the other is a desire to increase the market and reach new customers. But, Generac has not pursued its plans to buy any part of Briggs & Stratton by the close in August (2020) date.
