Why Do Carpenter Bees Hover?

Writer David Wilson

Carpenter bee males defend their territory by appearing aggressive and dangerous, but this is their only means of defense. To keep their nest safe, the males spend a lot of time hovering around it. Males are only there to mate and scare away predators so that females can raise their young in safety.

Why are carpenter bees hovering around my house?

It’s likely that swarms of bees looking for a mate will be seen hovering in your area. The good news is that they don’t sting because they lack a stinger. The bad news is that if there are males around, you’re likely to have a nest or nests nearby that need to be inspected and/or treated.

How do you get rid of hovering carpenter bees?

Insect repellents that are non-toxic include water with citrus oil or almond oil. To get the bees to leave the nest, use a spray bottle to apply a solution around the holes in the hive. Do this for 2-3 days by playing loud music with speakers next to the area where the bees have set up camp.

What smell do carpenter bees hate?

Citrus has a strong repulsive effect on carpenter bees. Slice the citrus fruit and boil it for 10-15 minutes in a small pot of water to extract the juice. Spray the nest with cooled citrus water that has been fitted with a “stream” nozzle.

How do you keep carpenter bees from coming back?

Filling in old holes is essential to long-term carpenter bee control! Carpenter bees have a tendency to return to the same hole over and over again, so sealing the holes makes it difficult for them to return. Stop the bees from returning year after year by plugging up old holes.

Are carpenter bees harmful?

It’s common for people to be startled when they see carpenter bees crawling out of wood. Females have the ability to sting, but only if provoked. When they fly around people and animals, male wasps can appear aggressive, but they aren’t dangerous because they lack a stinger.
