Why do chiropractors require so many visits?

Writer Rachel Davis

Patients frequently inquire as to why chiropractors recommend frequent visits early in their treatment. When patients first come in for treatment, chiropractors frequently advise them to reschedule more frequently. However, some individuals say they will never visit a chiropractor again because they fear being asked to come back over and over.

The reason behind Recommending Multiple Visits

In fact, chiropractors’ “medicine” is primarily made up of spinal adjustments. It will take several of those adjustments for a new client, especially one who has never visited a chiropractor, to receive the appropriate amount of correction for their malalignment(s).

The chiropractor is focusing on the patient’s actual problem, rather than just the symptoms of pain that prompted them to seek therapy. Many people discover that medicine can hide an issue for a time, but it does not fix it. Chiropractors excel in the treatment of biomechanical instabilities, and that is where they shine.

How these visits work:

First Phase

The primary goal of the first phase is to alleviate suffering. This is the time when you feel the most pain. The major objective is to reduce your symptoms so you can go about your day without being in constant discomfort.

Second Phase

Now that the pain and discomfort are gone, we move on to the second phase of care. Which is restoring normal function. You would be very likely to hurt yourself again if you don’t correct your biomechanical instabilities (misalignments). That’s why this step is crucial for developing long-term success in the treatment and prevention of future injuries.

Third Phase

In the third phase, your chiropractor will work to ensure that your alignment is stabilized to prevent you from needing future corrections. This part of the care plan often includes common-sense activities such as staying active and continuing a home exercise program.

They also encourage patients to get check-ups on a regular basis for preventative reasons, and if they are having problems or pain, to seek therapy before the problem becomes chronic. I hope this sheds a little light on the rationale behind multiple visits. It is so important for chiropractors to focus on correcting biomechanical instabilities as opposed to symptomatic relief.
