The most common cause is a result of stress and/or grinding which leads to temporomandibular joint disorder or TMD. Here is where the wisdom tooth comes from, from an evolutionary standpoint it has been said that it is the wisdom tooth that helps to relieve this painful condition.

Over two hundred million people suffer from TMD globally, with women being more likely than men to experience symptoms.

Causes of TMD include genetics, teeth grinding or clenching, arthritis of the jaw joints, and stress. Additionally, some medications such as antihistamines, steroids, and psychiatric drugs can also be a factor in causing TMD. It has also been said that women are twice as likely to develop TMD than their male counterparts because of increased hormone levels particularly estrogen.

The average age for diagnosis ranges between 35-45 years old but any individual experiencing facial pain regardless of age should see a dentist right away for further evaluation given the complex nature of this condition.

However, there are things you can do to help prevent the onset of TMD or at least lessen your symptoms. The first involves maintaining proper oral hygiene keeping a careful watch on what products you use for cleaning your teeth as well as how long you brush for. This is important because bacteria will start multiplying in places where it doesn’t belong, leading inevitably to more severe problems later on down the line. Keeping track of any swelling or redness around the jaw area may also be a sign that something isn’t quite right and should be addressed immediately with a doctor.

Things like stress management techniques are important to try as well since TMD is highly correlated with stress levels in general. The recommendation here would be to take up exercise which has been found to improve stress levels.

Another important step is to make sure you are taking the proper vitamins and minerals, particularly calcium carbonate which has been found helpful in relieving TMD symptoms. This is because it helps to remineralize the teeth as well as rebuild any eroded enamel that may have taken place.
