The Fear Of Facilitating Meetings

You’d be surprised at how many people fear facilitating meetings. If you have a job, then it is likely that you might be asked to facilitate a meeting or do some kind of presentation. Meetings often involve talking and presenting to the team. In this article, I will go over some reasons why people are afraid to take charge of a meeting.

Leadership Skills

The truth is that some people just don’t have the leadership skills to facilitate a meeting. As a result of this, they can become very afraid if they are asked to run the meeting and to take charge of things. It is common for people to not want to be in the spotlight. Instead, they would rather be in the background. So, this is one of the reasons why people are afraid to lead a meeting.

Nervous

Some people are actually afraid to speak in front of other people. Based on this, they are less likely to have an interest in running a meeting. On the other hand, some people are not afraid to facilitate a meeting and will gladly do it without feeling too nervous. It really just depends on the person and their personality type.

Making Mistakes

No one is perfect, we all make mistakes. It’s one thing to make mistakes when you’re by yourself. However, making them in front of others in a meeting is completely different. Most people don’t want to mess up in front of their peers or coworkers. This is one of the reasons why some individuals will avoid being in charge of a meeting.

Anxiety

Anxiety can actually cause people to become fearful or stressed out about situations where they have to be social. A meeting is a perfect example of this. Speaking in front of people will pretty much put you in the spotlight. Some people are not able to deal with people staring at them while they are speaking.

Conclusions

It is not uncommon for people to be afraid to run a meeting if they are asked by a manager or someone at the company that they work for. There are situations in life where one might be asked to take the reins and effectively lead a meeting. This can happen at your job or even at your own business that you run. Even though an individual might be afraid to handle the facilitation part of a business, it does not mean that they won’t do it.
