To keep the surfer from actually slipping off the board while paddling out or riding a wave, surfboard wax, also known as “surfwax,” is a mixture of natural and synthetic waxes applied to the deck of the surfboard, bodyboard, or even skimboard. It can also be used to improve the grip of a kayak paddle or dragon boat paddle.

Unless you have wax on your board, you won’t be able to go surfing! To actually get the most you can out of your board and consequently your surfing, it’s critical that you use the proper wax for the temperature of water you intend to surf in.
Do you need to wax your surfboard every time?
Before each session, the majority of surfers like to re-wax their boards. De-waxing your surfboard at least four times a year, or whenever you go on a surf trip, is a good rule of thumb. If you have OCD, you may want to wax more frequently.
When should I wax my surfboard?
The actual temperature of the water you’re surfing in has a significant impact on how often you need to wax your surfboard. The more water you’re in, the more your board will melt and wear away. Re-waxing your board every three months or so is a good rule of thumb for keeping it in good condition.
Do you wax a soft surfboard?
Before each session, give your board a light waxing, and after a few months, do a complete waxing overhaul.
