Why Does Banana And Sprite Make You Vomit?

Writer John Campbell

This experiment has several versions, but the underlying idea is that the human body cannot absorb both bananas and Sprite at the same time.

On the Internet, there are several videos of people attempting this challenge and failing terribly. However, I felt it was vital to try the experiment myself for the sake of science.

The goal is to eat two bananas and then drink a can of Sprite as rapidly as possible. According to legend, it produces a chemical reaction in the stomach, causing the banana and Sprite combination to “evacuate.”

According to Boline, there hasn’t been any meaningful research done on Sprite with bananas. She did say, however, that one probable explanation is that, depending on the person, the human stomach can only store roughly two cups.

This has nothing to do with the chemical reactions between bananas and Sprite, but everything to do with the digestive system’s mechanics.

A stomach’s usual capacity is around 500 ml. Because any solid takes longer to digest than a liquid, consuming bananas slows the transit of stomach contents. To put it another way, bananas keep the stomach full. When you drink a liter of anything on top of the bananas you’ve previously eaten, your stomach is stuffed to or beyond its typical capacity.

When carbonated beverages are drunk, the carbonation is released as gas. The gas raises the pressure in the stomach over that which would be caused by the bananas and the Sprite’s liquid part.

The lower esophageal sphincter’s ability to hold everything in the stomach is overwhelmed, and vomiting occurs to relieve the pressure.

The stomach can only hold so much, and the body has a cunning technique of keeping the seams from splitting open. The vomiting reflex is triggered when the stomach is overfilled or extends a lot in a short amount of time. Most people will become ill after eating two huge bananas and drinking a liter of fizzy water because their stomachs become too full.

More than two bananas or extra-large sprite bottles are frequently used in the variations of the challenge that create truly epic puke responses. The versions of the challenge that include two bananas and a can of sprite produce less puking.

Bananas are quite satiating. When I’m going to run more than 15 kilometers, I always eat at least TWO bananas and drink a liter of water, which keeps me going till the end.

I don’t drink anything with added sugar anymore, but Sprite is carbonated, and carbonated drinks cause you to burp and fill your stomach with gas.

As this is the first time I’ve heard of this challenge, I’m not sure if combining the two would make somebody vomit, but I assume it must be painful to have all that gas in your stomach. That, along with the fact that bananas fill you up, means your stomach has no immediate way to release all that gas unless the solids are removed first.

No, you won’t fart just yet because the gas hasn’t made it to the large intestine.
