Why Does My Dog Poop Immediately After Eating?

Writer Caleb Butler

Have you noticed how human babies poop right after consuming baby food? It’s the same scenario with most of the dogs. They consume their food, and you see them rushing to empty it straight away!

For any dog owner, this might seem puzzling and problematic.

Hence, you’re left wondering, “why does my dog poop immediately after eating?”

And that burning question needs its due attention with some possible reasons.

In this post, we’ll guide you as to why your buddy defecates immediately after consuming the meal.

Let’s get straight to it.

It’s the bowel reflex (gastro-colic reflex)

You might’ve crafted a schedule for his feeding and potty time. However, it doesn’t always go as you wish!

You feed the dog, and he goes to his toilet immediately in response to his urge.

In medical terms, we call this ‘urge’ a reflex or gastrocolic reflex. It’s a natural reflex that causes the urge to poop right after he has finished eating.

Following his feed, he will have to give in to his urge stimulated in response to consuming food.

This reflex is most commonly found in puppies, so you don’t have to get panicky about it!

Your dog is of a different breed

Just like every human is different from each other, so are the dogs!

While your friend’s dog may poop after 30 minutes following a meal, your dog might take fewer minutes to empty. This is a common and a usual occurrence, mainly because your dog is different from others.

Perhaps, your dog gets full after consuming his food and that’s probably okay!

It’s his natural reflex making him defecate more often than his other dog companions.

Food is not of good quality

Are you feeding your dog quality food? If so, then you don’t have to worry about it.

However, if you feel the food is not of good quality, then it’s time to switch to new food!

Try changing to other good food brands and see if your buddy likes it.

Your dog’s digestive system is fast

Surprisingly, your dog is blessed with a fast digestive system. That means, the more he eats, the more quickly he digests it.

His digestive tract allows him to digest food fast, allowing more empty storage in his tummy.

Hence, he will poop more often and immediately after consuming food.

It’s no surprise that your dog loves the food!

Your pup can’t control his bowel urges

The younger a dog is, the harder it is for him to control his bowel urges.

Typically, a pup will defecate more often and right after consuming his food.

It’s quite normal for a small dog or a pup to have a different pooping schedule.

You can, however, take note of their pooping patterns and make a schedule out of it.

This way, your dog will start to adjust to his new pooping schedule and it won’t be worrisome for you.
