Why is my friend prettier than me?

Writer John Campbell

If you pay attention throughout your life, you will see that beauty is a mixed gift in most civilizations. It isn’t quite as good as it seems. Sure, drinks are purchased, but you are expected to consume them. If you have beauty, be aware that the pushy, sleazy, and parasitic among us will seek out your company first before seeking out others. You will have good cause to distrust whatever a man says, has ever said, or will ever say to you, as well as most women. Some people will be irritated by your beauty because of their pettiness and territorial problems. Some, and to a large extent “many,” will regard your personality as a barrier to being bedded.

Doors will be flung open with the expectation that you will enter. It IS a source of power, as you can see at first look, but it is a power with a lifespan far shorter than most lifetimes, and the time spent honing its impact will be wasted, time that could have been spent honing another personal power. Society is fickle, and if it was your only tool, it would be desolate if you misplaced it one day.

Be pleased for your friend’s happiness, but understand that she, like you, does not have an easy road to it. If you go out with the mentality of “she’s so much prettier…watch her receive all the attention,” you’ll shrink and give her the spotlight. Consider how you portray yourself in her presence. Do you keep your back straight? Do you put on your finest clothes, hair, and makeup? Do you make an attempt to engage with everyone that approaches the two of you? My guess is that you’re so preoccupied with her that you’ve completely forgotten about yourself. We ladies have a propensity to adopt the “I’ve already lost, so why try” mentality. This includes slouching in a corner, seeming frumpy, and ignoring or avoiding anybody who approaches.

Building up the self-esteem and confidence in ourselves goes with the guarantee of feeling better and beautiful.
